The Scoop On Golfers Elbow

Before You Seek Golfers Elbow Treatment…

If you are seeking golfers elbow treatment after having elbow pain, it is important to understand the background of this irritating condition.

Golfer’s elbow is an inflammatory condition that effects the inside area of the elbow, close to your “funny” bone.

Attached to this bony part of the elbow is the common flexor tendon.  Located in this area are muscles along your forearm that flex the fingers towards the palm and bend the wrist forward.

It is caused by activities that place too much strain on your forearm flexor muscles, thus pulling on the tendinous attachment to that area.  This makes the area tight and inflamed.

Pain in the inside elbow on that bony attachment is the most common complaint. Another common symptom is numbness or tingling that radiates down your forearm into your fingers, usually the ring finger and the little finger.   The symptoms get worse with activity.

Also known as medial epicondylitis, the term “golfers elbow” came about when this condition resulted from an alteration in the biomechanics of the arm while swinging.

When you elicit too much elbow flexion upon contact with the ball, then creates more abnormal stress on the inside of the elbow rather down through the arm and into the ball.

It is important to note that this condition is not exclusive to golfers.  Golfers elbow can happen with any activity involving repetitive use of your forearm flexor muscles – these are the muscles located in your forearm with your palm up – while your elbow is in the bent (flexed) position.

Repetitive motion of the wrist, either by bending it or by moving it sideways can strain the forearm flexor muscles and tendons, thus leading to this condition.

Golfers elbow can, but not always, also be associated with neck, shoulder or wrist pain.  This is because an alteration in biomechanics of the arm can also lead to stress on other places in the arm and neck.

If you are suspicious that you have golfer’s elbow you should seek appropriate golfers elbow treatment. Failing to do so, especially if you continue to do the activities that lead to it, can eventually lead to non-stop and worsening elbow pain, followed by weakness and stiffness in your hand, wrist and forearm.

Golfers Elbow – The Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

In this post we will discover what golfers elbow is, what causes it and how to prevent it.

Golfers elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is a condition that appears on the inside of your elbow.

It is essentially a form of tendonitis that is brought about with excessive repetitive motions your forearm flexors, the muscles that make your wrist bend down.

As the muscles tense and pull against the tendons, this leads to cumulative trauma (CT) of both those muscles and their tendinous attachment to the inside of your elbow; i.e., the medial epicondyle.

Associated with the CT is inflammation of an acute nature.  However, with repeated overuse, repeated micro-tears appear which lead to chronic inflammation and scar tissue.

The most obvious symptom is pain and tenderness at the medial epicondyle, made worse with any activity associated with your forearm flexors, the muscles that make your wrist bend down.  These muscles are also responsible for gripping, grasping and, of course, golf swinging.

However, you don’t have to be a golfer to get golfers elbow!

This condition is also common with any activity involving repetitive use of your arms and hands.  Excessive typewriting can lead to it.  So can carpentry work, painting, and mechanical work.

 

How to Help Prevent Re-Injury and Treating Golfers Elbow

Most of the ways to help with this disease all have a common theme that apply to healing tendonitis type problems.  It is important to note that, while these are the most commonly advised golfers elbow treatment methods, they are not necessary the best ones.

Rest is often advised as the first step.  At first glance, it does not make sense to keep aggravating this condition, so rest is necessary.   The problem, however, is rest, by itself, is not the sole solution to getting rid of this condition.   Have you ever started to feel the pain again eventually after resting?  I’m pretty sure you have.

Ice is also another commonly recommended intervention.  This does help to lower the inflammation and swelling.  But again, just like in the case of rest, your condition does not disappear.   You were not meant to ice after activity for the rest of your life.  Trust me.

In conventional programs of golfers elbow treatment, anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, are commonly advised.  Again, they help to reduce the pain and inflammation.  However, they will eventually do you more harm than good.  Not only will they mess up your body’s signals telling you something is awry, but with chronic use they may weaken your tendons and muscles, making the condition worse.

Other conventional methods of golfers elbow treatment include gentle stretches, massaging, wearing straps or braces, even cortisone shots or surgery (ouch!).

While some conventional interventions are very important, such as doing stretches and warm-up, those, by themselves, do little to tackle the cause of the problem. This is why some these interventions at best just manage the problem, not cure it.
